Desert Riding Lizards are domesticated beasts used by Desert Outriders as mounts. They appear as enlarged basilisk lizards with bodies that lay low to ground with splayed out legs. Wide hands and feet allow them to walk and run along the sand without sinking in. They have large dorsal frills that run from the back of their heads to the tip of their tails used for temperature regulation and shade. Though it is trimmed at the shoulders where the riding saddle is placed, this doesn’t seem to cause the animal any discomfort.
Prized for their speed the lizards have been entirely domesticated, almost entirely helpless if left on their own in the wild, so it is rare to find any alone in the wastes. The lizards and their riders form tight bonds becoming inseparable as both rely on each other for survival in the inhospitable environments they make home. When in combat they can leap from enemy to enemy rending targets with their claws. Though they normally walk on all fours, when chasing down prey they gain enough momentum to run on just their hind legs, this also gives their riders better vantage points to throw projectiles from.
