Ignitable Hide. When the flint dragon is struck by a metal melee weapon its hide reacts with a violent burst of flames and sparks, engulfing every creature within 5ft of the attacker. Every creature in that area must make a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw, taking (1d8) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. The damage is doubled if the attack was critical.

Actions

Multiattack. The dragon makes three attacks: one with its bite and two with its claws.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: (2d10 + 3) piercing damage. If the target is wearing metal armor the attack deals an additional (1d4) fire damage.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: (2d6 + 3) slashing damage. If the target is wearing metal armor the attack deals an additional (1d4) fire damage.

Constrict. Melee Weapon Attack +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 13 (4d8 + 4) bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 15). Until this grapple ends, the creature is restrained, and the dragon can't constrict another target.

Flint Dragons are quite animalistic relative to other true dragons, and while they are quite intelligent they do not speak. Wingless, they have long serpentine-like bodies with six limbs sprouting from under them. Only 2 sets touch the ground, a shorter vestigial set moves in tandem with and sits almost directly behind the front legs. Their hides are made from overlapping slender black shards of flint that reflect light off their shiny surface and many small facets. These scales also come with the property of reacting violently when struck by metal objects or weapons. Their long bodies allow them to wrap and constrict enemies with ease, simultaneously crushing their foes and burning them when their armor reacts to attacks.

Behavior

Flint Dragons are ambush predators, hiding in wait along mountain passes ready to lung out and constrict unsuspecting travelers. They are fully aware of their abilities and what kind of materials activate the explosive nature of their hides, so they target wearers of metal armor first, binding them tightly. While relentless in their attacks, they are also self-preserving and will attempt to flee if a fight seems to be going against their favor.

Knowledge Checks

Nature DC 16 - Flint Dragons are dangerous dragons with hides that can burst into flames.

Treasure

Flint Dragons rarely hoard in the same way other dragons do. Their relatively faster metabolisms require more focus on the dragon’s next meal. Their hide however, if successfully removed from a slain dragon with a successful Survival check DC 12, can be turned into Flintbite Blade by a craftsman.

Flintbite Blade

Weapon (any dagger or sword), Rare
A bladed weapon that’s edge is made entirely of the hide of a Flint Dragon. When the weapon hits a target made of metal or is wearing metal armor, the target takes an additional (1d8) fire damage.
Organization

Flint Dragons prowl mountainsides for prey alone.

Game Hooks

A small village that gets supplies from a town to the north has not seen a single caravan come through the high mountain pass the traders and merchants take for months. Though locals have reported sounds of explosions coming from the pass almost daily. At this point the townsfolk are too afraid to go investigate it themselves and are desperate for any would-be adventures to hike to the mountains and clear out whatever trouble there may be.
